Secondary Liver Cancer:What is secondary liver cancer?
Secondary liver cancer means the cancer is developed in another part of the body and has spread to the liver and the most common cancers that may spread to the liver are cancers of the stomach, lung, colon and breast.
What are the causes of secondary liver cancer?
The cause of secondary cancer in the liver is always a primary cancer somewhere else in the body and if the cancer cells from the primary
cancer escape into the bloodstream, the liver is a likely place for them to settle. Sometimes, secondary cancer is found in the liver and even with thorough medical tests, it is not possible to find out where it has spread from however this is because the primary tumour may be too small to detect and is causing no symptoms.
What are the symptoms of secondary liver cancer?
Mostly secondary cancer in the liver does not cause any symptoms for a long time and it may only be discovered by routine tests and even if symptoms occur they may include loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea and tiredness. Some people may also have symptoms like fever, jaundice, pain in upper right abdomen, vomiting and swelling abdomen.
What are the treatments of secondary liver cancer?
Treatments of liver cancer will vary according to the individual also depending on which stage have they reached and some of the possible treatments are surgery, liver transplantation, chemotherapy and radiation where liver transplantation is the replacement of one liver with another. Radiation therapy is the use of x rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors and Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Since in surgery, leukemia cells can spread to all the organs via the blood stream and the lymph vessels hence surgery is usually not an option.
And the new treatments for secondary liver cancer are Laser or radiofrequency (thermal) ablation, Cryotherapy or Cryosurgery, Hepatic artery chemoembolisation and Alcohol treatment. These new treatments are still being researched to see how they can be used to treat secondary liver cancer in the most effective way and they are only available in some specialist hospitals also these treatments may sometimes be used in combination with standard treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery.
