Liver Function:Introduction: The liver is the largest organ in the body and is located in the upper right corner of the abdomen also it plays a variety of important roles in the body. It stores fuel gleaned from sugars, makes needed proteins, and helps remove poisons and toxins as well as the liver also makes a substance called bile that helps in digestion. Functions of the liver:
There are many functions of the liver such as our body makes many waste products for e.g. bilirubin
that is the degradation product of the red dye in our blood which can be excreted only by the liver. Also the liver plays a central role in the detoxification of drugs where drugs are being taken up by the liver, degraded and excreted. Also the liver is placed strategically between the gut and the rest of our body acting as a filter and prevents the passage of bacteria from the gut into the blood as well as is an important player in our defense mechanism.
Some other important functions of the liver are homeostatis that includes glucose, proteins, hormones, vitamins, fat and cholesterol. Liver also used as storage of vitamins and cholesterol and also it synthesis proteins including the clotting factors, bile acids and cholesterol. Liver excretes cholesterol, bile acids, phospholipids, bilirubin, drugs and poisons for e.g. pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals. Also defenses against bacteria in the gut and also special macrophages gobble up bacteria which have crossed from the gut into the blood. The liver filters poisons from the gut, nutrients such as amino acids, sugar and fat, IgA, drugs, bilirubin and bile acids.
Liver function test:
Liver function tests represent a broad range of normal functions performed by the liver and also the diagnosis of liver disease depends upon a complete history, complete physical examination, and evaluation of liver function tests and further invasive and noninvasive tests. Or liver function tests are a group of blood tests that doctors order when they want to find out whether the liver is functioning as it should, and whether there's been any kind of damage to the liver; hence these tests can help a doctor diagnose viral infections or any sort of liver damage from other health problems. Liver function tests typically measure alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, total protein, and total and direct bilirubin.
